Energy-Wise Lighting Print E-mail

Read moreLighting is an element of our home and work environment that affects our life in many different ways.

Lighting lets us see to carry out the daily tasks of life; it affects our comfort and mood, and it can provide safety and security. Lighting and lighting fixtures also play a major role in the interior decoration of our homes.

Our consumption of electricity related to lighting also affects our budgets, both at home and in our workplaces. The Department of Energy reports that we spend, on average, 5-10% of our electric bills on lighting in our homes. In some regions of the U.S. this amount can be as high as 25% where air-conditioning is a modest portion of the bill.

ALA members provide ideas of how you can reduce your home's electric bill by installing energy-efficient lighting, and will also provide you with a general overview of home lighting concepts.

As a point of beginning, let's look at some basic concepts that will help us to better understand how these savings can be achieved.

Energy Saving Decorative Light Strings for Consumers Print E-mail
Written by Source

5_dls_examplesIf all decorative light strings sold in America this year were ENERGY STAR qualified, we would save over 2 billion kWh per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to nearly 300,000 cars!

ENERGY STAR qualified decorative light strings — many which feature LED technology — consume 75% less energy than conventional incandescent lights strands.

ENERGY STAR Qualified Decorative Light Strings:

  • Can last up to 10 times longer than traditional incandescent strands.
  • Are cool to the touch, reducing the risk of fire.
  • Do not have moving parts, filaments or glass, so they are much more durable and shock-resistant than other light strings.
  • Are available in a variety of colors, shapes and lengths.
  • Come with a three-year warranty, meaning fewer light string replacements.
  • Are independently tested to meet strict lifetime and electrical requirements.
  • Products labeled for outdoor use are subjected to weathering tests.
  • Some models deliver features such as dimming or color shifting.

What is an LED?
Light emitting diodes, or LEDs, are small light sources that are illuminated by the movement of electrons through a semiconductor material. LEDs are exceptionally energy efficient when producing individual colors, many using up to 90% less energy than an incandescent bulb to produce the same amount of light. For example, the amount of electricity consumed by just one 7-watt incandescent bulb could power 140 LEDs — enough to light two 24-foot (7.3-meter) strings.
