10 Dignifying Ways for Haitians Helping Haitians Print E-mail
Written by lookingreen

haitian_helpingI can’t help but see the plight of the Haitian people as they suffer. The food and supplies at the airport mound as high as their shallow mass graves and fiery burial hills. I see hundreds of able-bodied men and boys pressing on barricades – outreaching for help. I can't give money, but as I was on my knees tonight these ideas came to me.

  1. Haitians-Helping-Haitians (HHH). The Haitian people are your best resource and most available supply chain. Let the people distribute the food and water instead of waiting for you to take it to them. Ask all those who are able to be “HHH” volunteers. This gives the people dignity in each other and their country.
  2. All those who come to the airport, and your other major storehouses, let them form into 100 lines (or some number that works for you). Form 100 distribution lines on the other side and simply hand the people the food.
  3. One-Four-Me. Ask each person to take one parcel and pass three to other persons not able to join the line, maximum of four parcels per person. You run the risk of some people holding on to the packages, but you trust that majority will do the honorable thing, because you were willing to put that trust in them.
  4. While that is ongoing, use your trucking for medical aid and food to the clinics for the injured and aid workers, and people on the outskirts.
  5. Ask for more HHH volunteers to assist at the clinics. Assign each patient an attendant, someone to help that patient with non-medical care, feeding them, fanning flies, hygiene, and for companionship.
  6. One group of HHH volunteers can be tasked with keeping your clinics clean, taking out bedpans, disposing of medical waste (rather than dropping everything on the ground openly).
  7. A large group of HHH volunteers should start working on a census (if not already in place). Everyone who stands in line should he given a pedigree form and a pencil to record their name and the names of their family members, those alive, dead or missing.
  8. Each form should have a stub with a barcode and number for that person to retain for their records. They will hand in their forms that will later be scanned and recorded.
  9. Include the children youth in your volunteer program, maybe age 10 plus, with a special name like “HHH-Kids” or “HHH-Youth”. Rather than ship them off to a foreign land, organize them now to take leadership of their country.
  10. Assign your volunteers for 6-10 hour shifts, so everyone gets a break and a chance to help. Out of that 2.5 million people, there must be some at least 10,000 who are willing to help each other.

I hope these thoughts spur some ideas for you on the ground. I’m sure it is daunting, but standing afar off, I can’t do much more than offer suggestions. One Love.
