Haiti Call to Action for the Green Community Print E-mail
Written by lookingreen

Seeing pain and anguish on the faces of so many survivors in Haiti after the 7.0 earthquake Tuesday, January 12, is a call for everyone, everywhere to help. Lookin' Green calls upon the green coummunity to take an active lead and join with others around the globe show our true color - red, for the life blood that flows in all of us. Help in any way you can:

Cash Contributions
Cash donations are the most efficient and effective way to help the relief effort in Haiti right now. They will allow humanitarian organizations that are “on the ground” in Haiti to purchase the exact type and quantity of items needed by those affected by this crisis. You can immediately donate to the following organizations:

Red Cross
http://www.redcross.org/ Contribute online to the Red Cross, or donate $10 to be charged to your cell phone bill by texting "HAITI" to "90999."

World Vision
http://www.worldvision.org
World Vision will send out 18 metric tons of relief supplies for immediate distribution to quake survivors. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Port-au-Prince remains dire, and additional donations are urgently needed.

Care USA
http://www.care.org
CARE is deploying additional emergency team members to the devastated city of Port-au-Prince in Haiti, where the worst earthquake in 200 years destroyed houses and left thousands homeless. Donate today to help save lives!

Save the Children
http://www.savethechildren.org
Save the Children needs your support to help meet the most critical needs of children and families affected by the earthquake in Haiti. Your donation will help provide urgently needed medical attention, safe drinking water, and other necessities.

In Kind Contributions
Keep track of offers of in kind services and supplies being offered in your communities in the coming days. Those looking to donate time, supplies or funds should contact the Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) at 703-276-1914, or visit them online at http://www.cidi.org/incident/haiti-10a/

Other Ways to Help
You can also find more ways to help through the Center for International Disaster Information, or through USAID’s interactive website, which has a list of NGOs and instructions on how to help: http://www.usaid.gov

Families of American Living in Haiti
There are thousands of American citizens who are currently in Haiti. Families of Americans living in Haiti who are trying to find the status of their loved ones can contact the State Department at 1-888-407-4747. However, please note that this line is experiencing a high volume of calls at this time.

Travel to Haiti
Right now, the airport is being used to facilitate search and rescue efforts. This is a complex and difficult environment, and all of our efforts have to be focused on prioritizing and moving the right resources into Haiti that can save lives in the next 48 hours. That is why we are encouraging private citizens to focus their efforts on supporting established aid organizations that are deploying resources to Haiti, and to hold off on travelling there themselves.
